Mi a What is a porcelain dental crown?
crown?

One type of dental restoration is the dental crown, which is essentially a “cap” or “crown” placed on an existing damaged or aesthetically unpleasing tooth after its preparation. Its purpose is to strengthen the original tooth, preserve its integrity, and restore its original shape.

The dental crown looks and feels just like natural teeth. A well-crafted dental crown is entirely lifelike and provides a long-lasting solution for many years.

In common language, all types of crowns, regardless of their material, are known as porcelain crowns. More detailed descriptions of crown types are provided below.

Crowns can also be made for dental implants, offering the most natural way to replace missing teeth.

Various dental restorations are used to replace missing teeth. The number of missing teeth, the amount of remaining bone after tooth loss, the location of the gap, the patient’s preferences, and their overall health significantly influence the type of dental restoration that can be made in specific cases.

The most natural way to replace missing teeth is with crowns/porcelain crowns on dental implants. This allows for the creation of prosthetic teeth that closely resemble the original situation.

Bridges can also replace missing teeth. In this case, the teeth before and after the gap must be strong enough to support a crown made for them, bridging the area of the missing teeth with additional connected prosthetic teeth. While these restorations are very natural-looking and feeling, they may put more stress on existing teeth than implant-supported restorations.

Removable dentures (prosthetics) are another option for replacing missing teeth. The description of these is summarized in the section on denture treatments.

What is 4D planning for
crowns/dental restorations?

In cases of harmonious alignment of individual tooth groups, they support each other and protect the jaw joint during jaw movements. Therefore, precise planning of the position of artificial teeth and the movement of the jaw is very important. This is the fourth dimension, for which our practice has a unique method and years of experience. For 4D planning, our practice uses a Modjaw device.

What are the advantages
of crowns/dental restorations/4D planning?

The loss of one or more teeth is not just an aesthetic disadvantage. The loss of support for the teeth surrounding the gap can lead to their migration, affecting the original function of proper chewing and jaw support. The remaining teeth bear an uneven load, causing muscle tension and additional stress on distant parts of the body. Inadequate chewing can be a source of various general health problems.

All of these issues can be prevented with a well-timed and well-executed dental crown/dental restoration. However, it is essential for the new tooth to harmoniously fit into its environment, not just in photographs but also in synchronization with the other teeth during function. With our unique 4D method, we can model and plan the behavior of crowns and restorations during function. Thus, the restoration is not only comfortable but also seamlessly integrates with the other teeth, the jaw joint, and the muscles during function.

Important: it is advisable to plan tooth replacement before tooth extraction. Often, the best aesthetic and biological results can be achieved with immediate implantation and immediate restoration. However, even for later fixed or removable restorations, a more aesthetic and comfortable restoration can be achieved if preparations are made during tooth extraction.

What is the treatment process, what tools, what
techniques are used?

Crowns and other fixed restorations are perfectly shaped to match the color and shape of natural teeth. Depending on the materials used, two groups are distinguished: metal-based and metal-free restorations.

Metal-based crowns and bridges have a framework made of nickel-free, hypoallergenic metal, covered with tooth-colored ceramic or “porcelain.” The advantage of metal is its strength and cost-effectiveness. Larger “span” bridges can only be made using this method.

Metal-free restorations can be made from various materials. The framework or full tooth (“full contour zirconia”) is often made of zirconium oxide, or lithium disilicate (“glass-ceramic”) is used for the crown material. Glass-ceramic has the advantage of natural light transmission similar to natural teeth, but its strength only allows crowning of existing teeth or making veneers – bridges cannot be planned from this material. Zirconium oxide, on the other hand, is suitable for making bridges, and with modern, colorable zirconias, a perfectly natural appearance can be achieved, often without additional ceramic veneering.

Step 1.

During a personal consultation, we inform you about the differences between types of dental restorations and find the best personalized solution for you.

Step 2.

The treatment involves preparing the tooth (grinding it a bit), taking a traditional or digital impression, and creating a temporary crown for it.

Step 3.

In the dental lab, the final dental replacement is crafted, and we try it out one or more times with the patient to check its color and shape together before the dental technician gives it the finishing touches.

Step 4.

After we’ve finished making the dental crowns, we stick them onto the teeth. This adhesive is very durable, providing long-term protection for the tooth. After this, the crown can only be removed by damaging or cutting it.

Good to know

The treatment involves several steps, mainly the preparation (grinding) and the fixation/gluing of the crowns, which are done under local anesthesia.
