Keeping our teeth and gums clean is not only important for aesthetic reasons but also helps reduce the risk of various diseases such as osteoporosis, respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes by preventing gum inflammation.
However, why does gum inflammation develop even if I brush my teeth regularly?
Although we know that brushing twice a day can effectively combat plaque buildup on teeth, unfortunately, plaque-forming bacteria can easily accumulate in hard-to-reach areas and small grooves, eventually forming tartar deposits on the teeth. This crust-like, hard deposit cannot be removed by brushing alone. It is recommended to remove this and the so-called biofilm layer (a continuous layer of bacteria on the gums, teeth, and dental restorations) with professional teeth cleaning.
The process of professional teeth cleaning:
The first step is an assessment by a dental hygienist to evaluate the condition of the teeth and gums. Then, if necessary, the biofilm layer is revealed using plaque disclosing solution – this is only necessary if the extent of the buildup is not clear or difficult to recognize for some reason.
The second step is the removal of discolorations and tartar using a technique called sandblasting. This involves using a neutral-tasting prophylaxis powder that is gentler and more effective, as it does not damage or irritate the gums and enamel surface, while specifically targeting tartar and removing the biofilm layer.
Next, any remaining stubborn tartar is removed using ultrasonic technology. This technique, called Piezon, involves touching a needle-like instrument to the teeth, but instead of “scraping,” the tartar is removed from the enamel due to the effects of ultrasound, ensuring its integrity remains intact.
As the fourth step, remaining discolorations are removed with an Airflow solution – using a fine dental hygiene powder. This technology is gentle on the gum tissue, allowing us to provide a much more comfortable intervention for our patients.
At the end of the treatment, our dental hygienist will demonstrate the correct toothbrushing technique and provide personalized advice, draw attention to critical areas for cleaning, and explain the methods and tools of professional oral hygiene (such as dental floss, interdental brushes, electric toothbrushes, oral irrigators, plaque disclosing tablets).
The described treatment is the most modern procedure available for tartar removal and teeth cleaning. The EMS Air-flow Master device removes discoloration and tartar gently and safely, providing an excellent foundation for further treatments and in-office teeth whitening.
