The field of dentistry has been embraced by digitization. Many patients may not realize that much of dental technology has been computerized for years, with computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies taking over much of the execution.
In many clinics, patients still encounter traditional impression-taking methods, but in the dental laboratory, plaster models are scanned by special scanners to make them computationally processable.
A faster way to digitize data is to use an intraoral scanner directly on the patient’s teeth, eliminating the need for traditional impression-taking. With these data, the laboratory can immediately begin work.
Both traditional and digital dental procedures have faced challenges in accurately mimicking jaw movements based on tooth models. This was particularly challenging for new work planning, orthodontic adjustments, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issue examination and treatment. Thanks to advancements in computer technology, this limitation has been overcome with the help of a specialized device equipped with a 3D camera (Modjaw), which accurately replicates not only the precise tooth models but also their relationship to each other and jaw movements.
